Ice Fishing with the Crappi Candle!

Fish Caught using the Crappi Candle
This is a review of a relatively new product called the Crappi Candle. The Crappi Candle is a new fishing light designed to slide freely along the line without resistance. This design allows the Crappi Candle to act as both a weight and light. The Crappi Candle allows fish to see at night or in dark water conditions to locate food. The light is available in white or green.
TESTING
Attaching the Crappi Candle was very simple. Thread the fishing line line through the “eye” on the cap and through two rubber straps. You can then attach your rigging.
You now remove the cap and install the battery. To turn the light on/off you simply tap the unit against your hand. That’s it ... you’re ready to go.
My first thoughts on the Crappi Candle were would it actually attract fish or would it spook the fish. So off I went to a local reservoir just before dark. I set up over a deep weed bed just as darkness came. I only stayed for a short while but managed to catch a few crappies. I went home happy and surprised.
On the ride home I thought could it be I spooked more fish than I actually caught? Or did I attract the fish in the area? I had no way of knowing. I thought about this for most of the week until I came up with a game plan.
The following weekend I met up with two friends for some pre dawn fishing. Each of them set up 4 tip ups and each had a jigging rod. I had my jigging rod set up for live bait and with the Crappi Candle attached to the line. By the time my buddies had set up I had a nice perch on the ice. About ten minutes later another nice perch and again this was among 8 tip ups with live bait. A few minutes later one of the tip ups yielded a nice perch and several minutes after that I had caught another. Hmmm .. 10 lines to 1 and I had 3 perch to the 1. Now I was building some confidence in this light.
I managed to use this light and catch fish throughout the rest of the ice fishing season with positive results.
My set up was a live bait rod , spinning reel, 6 lb test line, Crappi Candle, snap swivel, a jig head and live bait. It was simple and effective.

Conclusion:
I found the Crappi Candle to be another useful tool to catch fish out on the ice and I would assume it would work equally as well in open water. It definitely did not spook the fish but rather, I believe, attracted them. I also found the name Crappi Candle a bit misleading. Throughout the season I caught a variety of fish : crappie, perch, sunnies, pickerel and largemouth bass using it with live bait.
Another thing I found was I didn’t have to restrict it to night fishing. I used it to catch fish on overcast days and it worked equally as well. I also tried the Crappi Candle on a dark water reservoir on a sunny day and again it had worked well.
The only negative comment I heard with the Crappi Candle was the inability to remove the light without retying. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal myself.
One other thing I did was to remove the battery when I was done fishing. I placed it in a small zip lock bag. The reason for this was bouncing around in a rod bag or bucket can set the light on and off .. depleting the battery life.
I hope this review gave members some insight into this new fishing light. I wish I had a working DVR to have been able to get some underwater footage but I did not so I took photo’s instead.

Wow is the word that comes to mind when it comes to the Crappi Candle, after using them. But the first words that came to mind when I first heard about them were yep another gimmick.
Well let me tell you that is not the case with the Crappi Candle. 4 Bears lighting has put allot of thought and time into this product. I checked out their site and liked what I saw and placed my order for a couple and some replacement batteries so I could give them a try for myself.
Wow the Crappi Candle isn’t just for crappie it’s bright LED light attracts walleye, blue gill. Perch and northern pike as well as crappie.
I received my order of Crappi Candles in a timely manner and set out to put them to the test but not doing just any kind of fishing. I set out to test them ice fishing as I first heard about them when Garland Jones became a sponsor of an ice fishin site that I am a member of. Thanks for your sponsorship to the site Garland. The Crappi Candle is easy to set up and to use.
I first tried the Crappi Candle out in December, 2009 and was pleased with the out come, as I had fished one of my regular dams here in northwestern North Dakota. This dam is stocked with walleye, bluegill, northern, crappie and one of my favorite yellow perch. I fished with out the Crappi Candle for about two hours and then thought to my self “I have them why not try them?” I rigged one up the same as the other line I was using except this one had the Crappi Candle on the line and lit up. Here in North Dakota in December we don’t have much open water we do allot of ice fishing and that’s just what I did, I drilled my holes 3 to 3 ½ foot apart and put both lines in same bait same jig hook even the same size weight. The lines weren’t in more then two minuets when I started getting bites on the line with the Crappi Candle and nothing on the other as I said both lines were set up the same only one had a Crappi Candle and the other didn’t and they were only 3 to 3 ½ foot apart. After 5 perch on the Crappi Candle and only one on the other line, I switch holes to see if it was just a fluke or what and caught another 4 perch on the candle and none on the other line. Seeing what they had done for me on this body of frozen water I thought I needed to test them on another lake or dam. My next outing took me to a lake that has crappie walleye and northern. I drilled my holes again 3 to 3 ½ foot apart and rigged two lines the same except for one had a Crappi Candle on it. I put my underwater camera down another hole and was able to see both lines and it was awesome watching the northern come cruising in but they were only interested in the line with the Crappi Candle on it. It was a blast catching three northern out of the same hole in about 40 minuets. I then figured lets swap holes here also and see what happens. With the lines swapped the hole with the Crappi Candle started seeing action within just a few minuets. I managed to get two more northern for a total of five for the Crappi Candle and zero for the line with out. It was neat watching the northern checking out the light and even nipping at it from time to time seeing it on the underwater camera was neat as well and I took a few pictures of the northern checking it out. Now this had me sold even more on the Crappi Candle. I am a member of an icefishin site that Garland Jones became a sponsor, and held a Crappi Candle video contest. I thought it would be neat to try my hand at it but without a recording devise it wouldn’t happen. I got online and after some research and input from some of the guys on the site ordered me a HD Digital Camcorder that hooks right up to my underwater camera. Then the fun began.
I took some videos and entered the contest as I was pushed for time only had a week left when my camcorder arrived. I took and entered both the above and below ice video contests using the Crappi Candle and as it turned out I was the winner of both. I will and have continued to fish with the Crappi Candle until the ice is off the lakes and dams then I will put them to use in open water fishing.
Thanks Garland and everyone at 4 Bears lighting for a super product. I will be ordering more Crappi Candles and batteries. The batteries in the cold water only last five or six hours, but that’s a small price to pay for a product that helps you put allot more fish on the ice or in the boat.
The Crappi Candle has now become like my Vexilar, I don’t go fishing with out them.

Thanks to Garland and his company Crappi Candle introducing the Crappi candle last spring.
I have been having a ball using your revolutionary crappie fishing rig, In all types of water this past summer my day and night fishing trips. in the muddy and heavy stained water that is found in many lakes down here in the South the light from the crappi candle device illuminating the bait has increased the fish activity around my rig. In clear water, it makes the baits stand out like a neon sign.
This past Spring and Summer alot of you including myself did some night fishing under a light on a pier. Well, this little gadget works great at night under that pier light. It attracts small bait fish and insects, and not to far behind is the fish. Now the bigger fish are waiting in the deeper water to feed on the bait that gets past to smaller fish.
Fellow Anglers, do not think that the Crappi Candle is just for crappie. I have caught some great catfish and bass with the candle day or night.
I highly recommend the Crappi Candle to all the fishing folks here, Just like I do to the thousands of visitors to my website www.crappieslabfishing.com or www.basshogfishing.com.
The Crappi Candle has impressed me enough to actually sell the fish attracting rig on my website.
For me to sell a fishing product to my website visitors to increase their fun, it has to work as the manufacture promised or it doesn't get recommended by me and definitely not sold by me.
One of the missions of my website is to protect visitors from products that do not work.
Take The Fish To The Freezer The Crappi Candle Works As Advertised.
Oh, one more thing, to help you save you a few bucks. Please do not forget to order a card of batteries when ordering the Crappi Candle. The reason behind that tip is go to Walmart Jewelry Department and look what they want for one battery. When buying a card of batteries on-line you get five which should be enough to last you a summer of fun.
If you are in the Memphis Tennessee area during February 2009, come to the Agricenter February 20 -22 , 2009 to see me demonstrate the Crappi Candle and buy some, but I would not wait that long.

Last spring the folks at 4 Bears Lighting requested I film some underwater video of a new fishing product called the Crappi Candle, developed to night fish for crappies. The idea was simple and straight forward. A small light connected to the fisherman’s line would rest just above the fisherman’s bait and shine down on the bait, illuminating the bait in similar but simpler fashion as large lights used at night for crappie fishing. The original concept was to make the bait more visible at night and catch more crappies.
Curious if the idea would work, I took the Crappi Candle to a local lake and set up an underwater video camera using Aqua Vu’s Scout model along with its digital recorder accessory. Late in the day under low light conditions, I put a Crappi Candle about a foot above my minnow bait and put the minnow 15 feet down near the bottom along a steep drop off. What we captured is authentic underwater video of the Crappi Candle in action, and you can view it yourself on the front web page of crappicandle.com. The results exceeded anyone’s expectations.
What the video shows is unmistakable evidence that more than just illuminating the bait, the light actually attracts fish, especially crappies. You can see on the video curious and pesky bluegills that quickly came to the light first and started chasing the minnow bait and checking out the light. But then you’ll see crappies swimming to the light, attracted to the light more than the minnow swimming just a few inches away. Even crappies not interested in an easy meal approached the light with curious intent. No one guessed that rather than spook fish, the Crappi Candle’s light did more than just shine on the bait, it attracted fish to the bait even if the fish weren’t interested in the bait. Few fishing products can do that.
The video shows 3 different crappies taking the bait, one of which first came to the light, swam briefly away, and then returned a few seconds later at full speed to take the minnow.
The lake where we filmed the Crappi Candle is in Wisconsin where the water is clear and also where muskies inhabit many lakes. As it turned out, the Crappi Candle attracted so many crappies and bluegills that a musky is clearly visible on the video entering the scene looking for meal and investigating the camera disguised to look like a bluegill.
Also in the video a walleye is visible entering the scene just to investigate the light, and then swimming away, leaving the minnow below untouched.
The Crappi Candle does attract fish, no doubt about it, during the day as well as night. Next spring we’ll be filming a new and improved version of the Crappi Candle and comparing catch rates to fishing lines not using the Crappi Candle. Can’t wait. Stay tuned.
